Europe will block the “Nord stream-2”
The European Parliament on 13 December passed a resolution to halt construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. And this despite the fact that the building permit already issued by Germany, Finland and Sweden, and the construction itself has already begun. The solution is certainly political, but not able, like many other decisions of the European Parliament, to have any impact on the prospects of this project.
Recall that yesterday the house of representatives of the us Congress, where the majority held the opposition to President Donald Trump, the Democrats adopted a similar resolution. Speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin has expressed the opinion that the European Parliament adopted the resolution under pressure from the United States.
This assumption is realistic. In October Donald trump announced that his administration does not intend to impose sanctions against the pipeline “Nord stream-2” and its participants, in order not to ruin completely the already tense relations with Germany and Western Europe. After that, the function “pressure” on Europe, he gave his subordinates the type of the Minister of energy, Rick Perry, and they, in turn, as a “masher” was used quite minor officials that they are able to convince unless the European Parliament, reacting to a new EU phenomena is not always adequate.
Meanwhile, the Minister of economy and energy of Germany Peter Altmaier during the past in November the conference on energy cooperation between Germany and Russia said that Germany considers the project “Northern stream-2” the right and necessary step. Altmaier, however, said that he considers necessary after entry of the pipeline into operation more to take into account the interests of Ukraine as a transit country. But against this agrees with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, however, believes that the use of “Gazprom” capacities outdated gas transportation system of Ukraine should be economically viable.
With high probability, the further construction of the “Nord stream-2” has nothing and no one can stop it. Denmark will make a final decision on the permit for the construction of the pipeline or refusal until the third decade of December. Most likely through the European Parliament, the U.S. is trying to put pressure on Denmark. But even in case of failure of the pipeline will be an alternative route, not much increase the cost of construction. As said the head of “Gazprom” Alexey Miller on the “Nord stream-2”: “200 miles already built, and will finish the rest”. And it seems the most realistic scenario.
