There are reports that in July 2019, was made an extortionate attack on the computer system of the city of new Bedford in Massachusetts.

It turned out that the hackers then demanded a ransom of $5.3 million in bitcoin.

The mayor of new Bedford Jon Mitchell said that it was a virus Ryuk that blocked access to information on city computers 158.

Mitchell says that at first the city didn’t want to meet the demands of the hackers, but in the end they offered $400,000 of funds of the insurance indemnity.

The attackers then rejected the offer, but did not put forward any conditions. Then the city decided to recover the data yourself.

According to Mitchell, there is no evidence that theft of any personal data of the residents, while it is impossible to verify because the data was encrypted on multiple servers.
